Detailed 2-Day Humantay Lake & Salkantay Trek Itinerary

Our journey begins at 4:30 AM with pickup from your hotel in Cusco. We drive west through the scenic Limatambo Valley toward the mountain town of Mollepata (9,514 ft / 2,900 m), stopping for a hearty traditional breakfast prepared with local Andean ingredients.
After breakfast, we continue driving along a mountain road to Sayllapata and begin our steady 3-hour trek toward the high valley of Soraypampa (12,795 ft / 3,900 m). Upon arrival at base camp, you check into our Geodesic Domes, positioned directly facing the towering Salkantay glacier. After a mountain lunch prepared by our chef, we tackle the afternoon acclimatization hike to Humantay Lake (13,779 ft / 4,200 m).
The steep 1.5-hour climb rewards you with breathtaking views of the turquoise glacial lake reflecting the ice walls of Mount Humantay. Your guide leads a quiet moment to appreciate the sacred surroundings before we descend back to Soraypampa. In the evening, enjoy hot drinks and a mountain dinner before sleeping comfortably in your dome, shielded from freezing temperatures with clear views of the stars above the Andes.

We wake up early at dawn with hot coca tea served directly at your dome. Setting out early allows us to beat the larger crowds and climb at a steady, comfortable pace. We begin the zigzagging ascent along glacial moraines toward the high mountain pass.
Along the route, we stop at Suyrucocha for a high-energy snack before making the final push to Salkantay Pass (15,190 ft / 4,630 m), the highest elevation of the trek. Standing directly in front of the snow-capped face of Mount Salkantay (20,574 ft / 6,271 m), your guide leads a traditional Andean K’intu ceremony using coca leaves to honor the sacred mountain spirits.
After capturing 360-degree photos of the Vilcabamba mountain range, we begin our descent back to Soraypampa base camp (approx. 2 to 2.5 hours). A final farewell lunch awaits at camp before we board our transport for the return drive to Cusco, arriving near the historic center by 6:00 PM to 6:30 PM.

Mandatory Acclimatization Strategy: Day 2 reaches an extreme elevation of 15,190 ft (4,630 m) at the Salkantay Pass. We strongly require that travelers spend at least 2 to 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley prior to taking this trek to minimize altitude sickness (Soroche).
High Physical Ambition Required: This 2-day trek ascends rapidly to glacial elevations without a long multi-day warm-up. Travelers should possess good physical fitness, stamina, and leg strength.

Weather & Cold Temperatures: Soraypampa is located at 12,795 ft (3,900 m) near glaciers, where nighttime temperatures drop below freezing (0°C / 32°F). Dress in thermal base layers, a fleece jacket, a heavy down/waterproof coat, beanie, thermal gloves, and bring a cold-rated sleeping bag.
Footwear: Sturdy, broken-in hiking boots with good ankle support and grip are essential for gravel, loose rock, and stone paths.
