Your expedition begins at the golden center of the world: Qoricancha. Once the wealthiest temple in the Inca Empire, its walls were once plated in solid gold. Today, you can witness the world’s finest masonry stones fitted so precisely that even a razor blade cannot pass between them, now serving as the foundation for the colonial Santo Domingo Convent. This is the ultimate example of the “clash of two worlds.”
From the city center, we ascend to the heights of the valley to witness the true scale of Inca ambition at Sacsayhuaman. Standing beneath limestone blocks weighing over 100 tons, you’ll realize that the Incas didn’t just build; they reshaped the mountains. This megalithic wonder offers the most iconic panoramic view of Cusco’s red-tiled roofs.
Our journey continues through the limestone labyrinth of Qenqo, where ancient rituals took place in subterranean galleries. The Ticket Strategy: Do not worry about buying your Boleto Turístico in advance. It is much easier to purchase it at the first site we visit. Your guide will handle the logistics; just ensure you have the cash (Soles) ready.
Altitude Wisdom: At 11,152 ft (3,400 m), this tour is the best way to “test” your lungs. Walk at half your normal speed, breathe deeply, and stay hydrated.
Timing is Everything: The 7:30 AM departure is highly recommended if you want to enjoy Sacsayhuaman with fewer crowds and softer light for photography.
