Your expedition begins with pick-up from your hotel in Cusco or the Sacred Valley (morning departure around 8:00 AM or afternoon departure around 1:00 PM). Joining your small group and local guide, we drive through the high Andean plains, where open wheat fields stretch out toward the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range, including Mount Veronica and Mount Chicon.
Our first major stop is Moray (11,482 ft / 3,500 m), a site that challenges conventional understanding of ancient Incan technology. Looking down from the rim, Moray resembles a massive, sunken green amphitheater consisting of concentric circular terraces dug deep into the earth. Your guide will explain how the Incas utilized this site as a sophisticated agricultural research laboratory. Due to varying depths, stone wall design, and wind exposure, microclimates within the terraces create temperature variations of up to 15°C (27°F) between the top and bottom rings. After exploring Moray, we drive through the small colonial village of Maras toward the dramatic Qaqawiñay canyon to visit Salineras de Maras (Maras Salt Mines). As we round the canyon bend, a breathtaking view opens up: over 3,000 terraced, terracotta and white salt ponds clinging to the steep cliffside. These salt pans are fed by a single subterranean warm saltwater spring (Qoripujio) that has flowed naturally for millennia.
Your guide will explain how local families from the Maras community have hand-harvested this mineral-rich salt since pre-Inca times using ancient evaporation techniques. Water is funneled into each shallow pond, where the intense Andean sun evaporates the water over several weeks, leaving behind thick crusts of high-quality medicinal and culinary salt, including the world-famous Peruvian Pink Salt. This tour involves short, easy walks along designated dirt paths and viewpoints with minimal incline, making it an excellent activity for your first or second day while adapting to high elevation.
Departure Schedule Options: You can select either a morning departure (~8:00 AM) or an afternoon departure (~1:00 PM). Hotel pick-up can be arranged from Cusco city center, Urubamba, or Ollantaytambo. Please specify your location when booking.
Boleto Turístico (Tourist Ticket) Note: Moray requires the Circuit 3 Partial Tourist Ticket (or Full Tourist Ticket). Entrance to the Maras Salt Mines is collected separately on-site as it is managed directly by the local Maras community cooperative.
Walking Rules at Maras: Per local community regulations aimed at preserving water purity and salt quality, visitors view the Maras Salt Ponds from designated panoramic boardwalks and viewpoints rather than walking directly between individual salt pools.
