Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu & Signature Day Trip: The Complete 6-Day Expedition
Six days in the Peruvian Andes changes everything. While shorter itineraries offer a brilliant snapshot of the Inca Empire, a six-day expedition allows you to weave together the complete tapestry of Andean history, culture, and extreme natural beauty. This timeframe is the ultimate luxury: it grants your body the exact days it needs to acclimatize perfectly before tackling the towering peaks, and it gives you the power to customize the climax of your journey.
At Via Inca Travel, we have curated this 6-Day Premium Expedition to be the definitive Peruvian experience, far removed from the rushed “tourist factory” packages. You will explore the megalithic stones of Cusco, traverse the agricultural marvels of the Sacred Valley, and stand in awe before Machu Picchu.
But the true differentiator of this elite package lies in Day 5, where we hand the compass over to you. Do you want to conquer the colorful, high-altitude ridges of Rainbow Mountain, hike to the mesmerizing glacial waters of Humantay Lake, or take a gentler, culturally rich journey through the Maras Salt Mines and Moray? With our flawless private logistics, highly rated local guides, and premium boutique accommodations, your only task is to choose your adventure.

Detailed 6-Day Itinerary: Customize Your Andean Journey
Every step of this journey is led by our university-trained, fluent English-speaking guides who breathe life into the stones and landscapes of the Andes.
Day 01: Touchdown in the Naval of the World
Your elite expedition begins the second you land at the Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (Cusco). Our professional logistics team will be waiting at the arrivals gate with a personalized sign, ready to escort you to your private, modern vehicle. You will be transferred directly to your premium hotel in the historic center.
Because proper acclimatization is the absolute secret to a successful 6-day trip, we strongly advise treating today strictly as a rest day. Altitude sickness (Soroche) is real, so hydrate constantly, drink traditional Coca tea, and avoid heavy, hard-to-digest meals. In the late afternoon, once your body has settled, enjoy a slow, independent walk around the majestic Plaza de Armas to watch the sunset illuminate the Spanish colonial cathedrals built directly over original Inca walls.
Day 02: Megalithic Cusco & The Sun Temple
After an energizing Andean breakfast, we embark on a half-day Cusco City Tour. We start right in the city center at the Qoricancha, the spiritual epicenter of the Inca Empire where the walls were historically lined with thick sheets of solid gold.
We then drive into the hills overlooking the city to explore Sacsayhuaman. Standing next to these 100-ton limestone boulders, cut and fitted with laser-like precision without a single drop of mortar, will completely change your perspective on ancient engineering. We will also visit the ceremonial, subterranean labyrinth of Qenqo, the military ruins of Puca Pucara, and the ancient water temple of Tambomachay. We return you to your hotel around midday. The afternoon is yours to relax, explore Cusco’s world-class culinary scene, or shop for fine alpaca textiles.
Day 03: The Sacred Valley of the Incas & Train to the Cloud Forest
We leave Cusco at 7:30 AM, descending into the breathtaking and historically rich Sacred Valley. Our first stop is the archaeological site of Pisac, where massive agricultural terraces sweep down the mountainside like giant green staircases. Afterward, we head down to the vibrant Pisac Artisan Market to admire local craftsmanship and perhaps practice your bargaining skills.
We then drive to Urubamba for a premium buffet lunch featuring the finest Peruvian ingredients and local gastronomy (lunch is included). In the afternoon, we explore the monumental fortress of Ollantaytambo, climbing the very sun terraces where the Incas successfully repelled the Spanish cavalry. Later, we board our scenic train, watching the landscape shift dramatically from arid mountains to a lush, green, orchid-filled cloud forest as we arrive in Aguas Calientes for your overnight stay.
Day 04: The Machu Picchu Revelation
This is the morning you have been waiting for. We wake up early to take one of the first Consettur buses up the zigzagging Hiram Bingham road. Thanks to our advance booking strategy, you will enter the citadel with a Circuit 2 ticket (subject to booking time), granting you access to the classic, unobstructed viewpoint from the upper Guardhouse terraces.
Your private expert guide will lead a fascinating 2.5 to 3-hour exploration, uncovering the architectural mysteries of the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (Sun Dial), and the intricate stone quarries. After absorbing the powerful energy of the ruins, we bus back to town. You will have free time for lunch before catching the panoramic train back to the Sacred Valley. Your private driver will be waiting at the station to transfer you comfortably directly to your Cusco hotel.
Day 05: Choose Your Signature Expedition
By Day 5, your body is fully acclimatized to the Andes, making you ready for your chosen climax to the trip. When booking, select one of the following three elite experiences:
- Option A: The Rainbow Mountain Trek (Vinicunca). Designed for the physically fit and adventurous. We depart Cusco at 4:30 AM, driving south to the trailhead. This is a challenging, high-altitude hike where you will slowly ascend to an astounding 16,522 ft (5,036 m). The physical effort is instantly rewarded by a surreal, panoramic landscape of mineral-striped mountains painting the earth in vibrant reds, golds, and turquoises, with the massive Ausangate Glacier looming in the background. (Full day. Includes premium breakfast, lunch, oxygen tanks, and hiking poles. Return to Cusco around 4:30 PM).
- Option B: The Humantay Lake Trek. A spectacular journey to the base of the towering Salkantay glacier. Departing at 4:30 AM, we drive to the Soraypampa trailhead. You will embark on a steep, 1.5-hour hike up to 13,779 ft (4,200 m). At the top, you will discover a hidden, mesmerizingly turquoise glacial lake surrounded by jagged, snow-capped peaks—a deeply sacred site for the Andean people. (Full day. Includes premium breakfast, lunch, oxygen tanks, and hiking poles. Return to Cusco around 5:00 PM).
- Option C: Maras & Moray (Half-Day). A gentler, highly photogenic, and culturally immersive option that doesn’t require extreme hiking. Departing at 8:00 AM, we drive out to explore the circular, amphitheater-like terraces of Moray, an ancient agricultural laboratory used by the Incas. We then head to the stunning Maras Salt Mines, an impossibly beautiful canyon of over 3,000 salt pools that have been hand-harvested by local families since pre-Inca times. (Half-day. Return to Cusco by 2:00 PM, giving you a completely free afternoon to enjoy the city).
Day 06: Farewell to the Andes
Enjoy your final Peruvian breakfast. Depending on your flight time, take a last walk through the cobblestone streets, grab a local coffee, or do some final shopping. At the coordinated time, our private transport will pick you up from your hotel lobby and ensure a seamless, punctual transfer to the Cusco airport. Your expedition ends here, but the memories will last a lifetime.

Essential Information for Your Trip (Expert Guide: 6-Day Specifics)
Extreme Altitude Protocol (For Day 5 Hikers): While Cusco is high (11,152 ft), your Day 5 options reach extreme altitudes. Humantay Lake sits at 13,779 ft (4,200 m) and Rainbow Mountain peaks at over 16,500 ft (5,000 m). Because you have been in Cusco for 4 days prior, your body will be wonderfully acclimatized, but these hikes remain physically demanding. We carry emergency oxygen on these treks, but we strongly advise discussing altitude medication (like Diamox) with your doctor before traveling.
Microclimates & Technical Packing: You will cross multiple climate zones. Machu Picchu is a warm, humid cloud forest, while the summit of Rainbow Mountain can feature freezing winds and snow. Layering is mandatory. You must pack a windproof/waterproof jacket, a warm fleece, sturdy hiking boots (essential for Day 5), strong sun protection (SPF 50+), and a beanie/gloves for the high-altitude morning starts.
Train Luggage Restrictions: PeruRail and IncaRail enforce a strict baggage policy. You can only take a small backpack (max 5kg / 11 lbs) on the train to Aguas Calientes for your one-night stay. Your larger suitcases will be stored securely and for free at your Cusco hotel, waiting for your return.
The Reality of Circuit 2 Permits: To protect the ruins, the Peruvian government strictly caps daily entries to Machu Picchu. To ensure we can secure the panoramic Circuit 2 for your group, this 6-day package must be booked 3 to 4 months in advance, especially if you plan to travel between May and September.
