The Experience: A Journey of Contrast
Your expedition begins with a drive across the high Andean plains. As the city of Cusco fades, the horizon opens up to reveal the jagged, white peaks of the Andes. Our first stop is Moray, a site that challenges everything you thought you knew about ancient farming. From the ridge, it looks like a giant green amphitheater. In reality, it was a sophisticated agricultural laboratory. Because of the depth and orientation of these circular terraces, there can be a temperature difference of up to 15° C (27° F) from the top to the bottom. Here, the Incas “acclimatized” seeds from the jungle and the coast to grow in the thin mountain air.
Next, we descend to the town of Maras and continue to the breathtaking Salineras. As we round the corner of the canyon, the sight of 3,000 salt ponds clinging to the side of the mountain is blindingly beautiful. These mines aren’t a museum; they are a working community. Saltwater from a natural warm spring is channeled into the ponds, where the intense Andean sun evaporates the water, leaving behind the famous Peruvian Pink Salt. Your guide will explain the intricate communal system of ownership and the ancestral techniques used to harvest the salt today, exactly as they were 600 years ago. You’ll return to your hotel with a jar of the world’s finest salt and a much deeper respect for the land.
