Tour Summary: Classic 4-Day Inca Trail Highlights
A 42km (26-mile) high-altitude trek along original stone Incan paths, crossing high mountain passes, cloud forests, and stone ruins to enter Machu Picchu through the Sun Gate.
- Day 01: Cusco to Km 82 & Wayllabamba. Pickup in Cusco, drive to Km 82 checkpoint, trek along the Urubamba River past the Llactapata ruins, and camp at Wayllabamba.
- Day 02: Wayllabamba to Pacaymayo (Dead Woman’s Pass). Steep ascent crossing Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass at 13,828 ft / 4,215 m), followed by descent to Pacaymayo campsite.
- Day 03: Pacaymayo to Wiñay Wayna. Trek through cloud forests, exploring Sayacmarca, original Incan tunnels, Phuyupatamarca, and camping at Wiñay Wayna.
- Day 04: Wiñay Wayna to Inti Punku & Machu Picchu. Early morning hike to Inti Punku (Sun Gate) for panoramic views of Machu Picchu, guided citadel tour, shuttle to Aguas Calientes, and return train to Cusco.

Detailed Classic Inca Trail 4 Days Itinerary
Our native guides do not simply recite dates from guidebooks. They share ancient Andean legends, architectural secrets, and cultural depth that bring every stone site to life.
Our expedition begins with early morning pick-up at your hotel in Cusco (~5:00 AM). We drive through the Sacred Valley to Km 82 (Piscacucho – 8,858 ft / 2,700 m), where the roaring Urubamba River marks the official start of the Inca Trail. Here, we meet our team of porters and mountain chefs, undergo government passport and permit checks, and begin our 12 km (7.5-mile) trek.
Today’s hike serves as a gentle introduction to the trail and elevation. Following the path along the river valley, we stop to view the impressive archaeological complex of Llactapata (Patallacta), an ancient urban center featuring stone terraces and housing sectors. Your guide explains the agricultural and strategic significance of this site within the Inca road network while you enjoy views of the snow-capped Wakay Willca (Nevado Veronica) peak. We continue hiking along the Cusichaca River valley to reach our first campsite at Wayllabamba (9,842 ft / 3,000 m), where a freshly prepared mountain dinner awaits.
We wake up at dawn with warm coca tea brought directly to your tent. Today is widely considered the most physically demanding section of the trek, covering 11 km (6.8 miles) with a steep vertical climb. We ascend through native Polylepis forests and high-altitude grasslands toward the highest pass on the trail.
Pacing is essential as we climb the original stone Incan staircases to reach Warmiwañusca (Dead Woman’s Pass – 13,828 ft / 4,215 m). Standing at the summit provides panoramic 360-degree views of the surrounding Vilcabamba mountain range and glaciers. Your guide, equipped with pulse oximeters and medical oxygen, ensures everyone reaches the pass safely. After taking celebratory photos at the peak, we begin a 2-hour stone staircase descent into the Pacaymayo Valley (11,811 ft / 3,600 m) to reach our second campsite for a hot lunch and a restful afternoon of recovery.
Often referred to as the most beautiful day of the trek, Day 3 covers 16 km (10 miles) through changing ecosystems. We begin by climbing past the circular ruins of Runkurakay to cross the second mountain pass (12,959 ft / 3,950 m). From there, we descend along well-preserved Incan causeways to explore Sayacmarca, a stone fortress built dramatically over a cliff edge.
Continuing the trek, we enter the tropical cloud forest, passing through an authentic Inca tunnel carved directly into solid granite. We visit Phuyupatamarca (“Town Above the Clouds”) at 12,000 ft (3,658 m), marveling at its ritual stone baths fed by underground mountain springs. We then descend roughly 3,000 stone steps through lush bamboo and orchid-filled forest to reach our final campsite at Wiñay Wayna (“Forever Young”) at 8,692 ft (2,650 m). Here, we visit the adjacent terraced ruins before enjoying a farewell dinner with our porter crew.
Our final day begins before dawn (~3:30 AM). After checking through the final trail gate, we trek the remaining 5 km (3 miles) along a stone contour path through the cloud forest. We climb the steep stone steps of the “Monkey Steps” to reach Inti Punku (The Sun Gate – 8,923 ft / 2,720 m) just as morning light breaks over the Andes, revealing the iconic panoramic view of Machu Picchu below.
After absorbing the view from Inti Punku, we descend to the main citadel. Your licensed guide will lead a comprehensive 2 to 2.5-hour tour through the ruins, explaining the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana sundial, the Sacred Plaza, and the Royal Quarters. After the guided tour, we take the Consettur bus down to Aguas Calientes for lunch (optional, not included) before boarding the return train to Ollantaytambo, where our private driver transfers you back to your hotel in Cusco.

Essential Trip Planning Information
Strict Advance Booking Requirement: Government regulations strictly limit Inca Trail permits to 500 people per day (including guides and porters). Permits sell out months in advance. We strongly advise booking 4 to 6 months in advance to secure your preferred start date.
Passport Requirements: Your passport details (full name and passport number) must match your Inca Trail permit exactly. You MUST bring your physical original passport on the trail for government checkpoint validation.
Mandatory Acclimatization: Day 2 reaches 13,828 ft (4,215 m). Travelers must spend at least 2 to 3 days acclimatizing in Cusco (11,152 ft / 3,400 m) or the Sacred Valley prior to starting the trek.
Physical Preparation: The trail involves continuous climbing and descending over uneven stone staircases. Good physical conditioning, aerobic stamina, and leg strength are recommended.
Packing & Luggage Allowance: Main luggage remains safely stored at your Cusco hotel free of charge. You will carry a daily daypack with water, rain gear, camera, and warm layers. If hiring a personal porter, a duffel bag will be provided during your pre-trek briefing.
Weather & Trail Conditions: Mountain microclimates vary rapidly from intense sun to heavy rain. Pack thermal base layers, waterproof rain jacket and pants, sturdy broken-in trekking boots with good ankle support, wool socks, hat, gloves, and sunscreen.
