Cusco, Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu 5-Day Tour: The Perfect Pace
Let’s be completely honest: rushing through the Peruvian Andes is a mistake. When you are traveling to altitudes above 11,000 feet to see one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, your body needs time to adjust, and your mind needs space to actually absorb the experience.
That is exactly why our 5-Day Cusco, Sacred Valley & Machu Picchu Tour is the ultimate “sweet spot.” Adding just one extra day compared to our 4-day express route completely changes the rhythm of your trip. It allows us to include a deep dive into the megalithic ruins surrounding Cusco City, ensures a much safer and more comfortable acclimatization process, and lets you experience the Andes without constantly checking your watch.
At Via Inca Travel, we don’t do “tourist factories.” We are local experts obsessed with premium logistics. From the moment you land, we take entirely over. We handle the complex web of train schedules, government permits, and private transfers so you can focus entirely on the awe of the Inca Empire.

Detailed 5-Day Cusco & Machu Picchu Itinerary
We don’t just point at ancient stones and recite dates. Our university-trained guides decode the complex history of the Andes, taking you beyond the standard guidebook facts.
Day 01: Welcome to the Capital of the Incas
Your premium travel experience begins the precise moment you touch down. Our professional logistics team will be waiting at the Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport (Cusco) arrivals gate with a personalized welcome sign. You will be escorted to your modern, private vehicle and transferred directly to your chosen hotel in the historic center.
Because altitude sickness is a very real physiological reaction, we dedicate today strictly to your health. We highly recommend resting in your room, staying well-hydrated with bottled water, and sipping a traditional cup of Coca tea. By the late afternoon, your body will feel much better, allowing you to take a gentle, unguided stroll around the breathtaking Plaza de Armas to admire the colonial architecture built directly over original Inca foundations.
Day 02: Uncovering Cusco & The Megalithic Ruins
After a refreshing breakfast, we begin our half-day Cusco City Tour. We start right in the city center at the Qoricancha (The Temple of the Sun). This was the most important religious center of the Inca Empire, where the walls were once entirely covered in solid gold sheets.
From there, we drive just outside the city limits to witness one of the greatest engineering marvels of the ancient world: Sacsayhuaman. You will stand at the base of zigzagging walls made of massive limestone boulders, some weighing over 100 tons, fitted together so perfectly that not even a piece of paper can slide between them. We will also explore the ceremonial sites of Qenqo, Puca Pucara, and the ancient water fountains of Tambomachay. We will drop you back at your hotel around midday, giving you a completely free afternoon to enjoy a great local lunch, visit museums, or shop for high-quality alpaca garments in the San Blas neighborhood.
Day 03: The Traditional Sacred Valley Experience
Have your camera fully charged; today is a masterpiece of Andean landscapes. We depart your hotel at 7:30 AM, heading toward the stunning Sacred Valley of the Incas. Our first major stop is the archaeological site of Pisac, perched high on a mountain ridge. You will marvel at the sweeping agricultural terraces that curve along the mountainside and learn about the massive ancient cemetery hidden in the cliffs. Afterward, we head down to the vibrant Pisac Artisan Market, where you can practice your bargaining skills and pick up beautiful local textiles and ceramics.
Following a delicious premium buffet lunch featuring authentic Peruvian gastronomy in Urubamba (included), we drive to the living Inca settlement of Ollantaytambo. Walking through its original, water-channeled stone streets is like stepping back centuries in time. We will climb the impressive sun terraces that successfully held off the Spanish conquistadors. In the late afternoon, we head to the local train station to board our scenic train to Aguas Calientes. Watch the landscape dramatically transform from dry Andean peaks to a lush cloud forest as we approach the base of Machu Picchu for your overnight stay.
Day 04: The Magic of Machu Picchu
This is the day your ultimate travel dream becomes reality. We wake up early to catch one of the first Consettur buses up the winding Hiram Bingham highway to the sanctuary gates. At Via Inca Travel, our dedicated booking team makes it our highest priority to secure Circuit 2 permits whenever available. This specific circuit ensures you can hike up to the Guardhouse to capture that iconic, sweeping postcard photograph of the entire citadel.
For the next two and a half to three hours, your private expert guide will lead you on a deep dive into the history of the city. You will uncover the engineering secrets of the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana (Sun Dial), and the Temple of the Condor. You’ll learn exactly how the Incas built an invisible, underground drainage system that keeps the city standing to this day.
After soaking in the powerful spiritual energy of the ruins, we will take the bus back down to town. You will have free time to enjoy a celebratory lunch before boarding your panoramic train back to the Sacred Valley. Upon arrival, your private driver will be waiting to transfer you comfortably and directly back to your hotel in Cusco.
Day 05: Departure and Farewell
Enjoy your final Peruvian breakfast at the hotel. Depending on your exact flight schedule, you may have a few hours to do some last-minute silver shopping or grab an amazing cup of local coffee near the main square. At the coordinated time, our private transport will pick you up from your hotel lobby and transfer you seamlessly to the Cusco airport. The tour officially ends here, but you will leave with a profound connection to the Andes and memories that will last a lifetime.

Essential Information for Your Trip (Expert Guide)
Altitude Sickness (Soroche) Intelligence: Cusco is located at a demanding 3,400m (11,152 ft). Having this 5-day itinerary is a huge advantage because Day 1 is purely for rest. Still, we strongly advise limiting all physical exertion on your first day, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding heavy meals or alcohol upon arrival. Consult your primary doctor regarding altitude sickness medication (like Diamox) before traveling to Peru.
Packing & Microclimates: The weather in the Andes changes rapidly and without warning. Cusco can be freezing at night, while Machu Picchu (located in the cloud forest) is humid, warm, and highly prone to sudden rain. Layering is the only strategy that works. Always carry a high-quality waterproof jacket or poncho, strong sunscreen, and DEET-based insect repellent.
Train Luggage Restrictions: PeruRail and IncaRail strictly enforce a baggage safety policy. You are only allowed to bring a small backpack or duffel bag (max 5kg / 11 lbs) on the train to Aguas Calientes for your overnight stay. Don’t worry, your main, heavier luggage will be safely and securely stored for free at your hotel in Cusco.
Permit Scarcity & Booking Strategy: Machu Picchu entrance tickets are strictly limited by the Peruvian government to protect the site, and they sell out months in advance, especially during the high season (May to August). To secure the highly coveted Circuit 2, we strongly recommend booking this tour at least 3 to 4 months prior to your intended travel dates.
